Can I Save Money with a DIY Wedding?

The answer is definitely a YES!  You can save money on a DIY wedding.  But for many, the sheer number of hours spent planning and racing all over the city chasing Marketplace sellers, trying to find just the right props can far outweigh the savings.  So, before you run off to buy the very latest Cricut machine and spend countless hours pinning inspiration photos to Pinterest boards there are a few things to keep in mind

Plan Your Time

A full DIY wedding may save you money, but it is a huge investment of your time.  Typical planning of a wedding can be anywhere from 100 to 200 hours.  If you are hoping to undertake all the planning and styling yourself, then you could expect to exceed 300 hours by the time your big day arrives.

Ensure you have plenty of time to plan every aspect in the months leading up to your wedding or you might just end up stressed and wondering why you ever wanted to get married in the first place?

Get Organised Early

Let’s face it, not everyone has the organisational skills to completely plan a wedding.  If you are not a highly organised person, you many need to reconsider a DIY wedding.

If you procrastinate or leave things to the last minute before making a final decision, you could very well end up not being able to find or hire specific items or the vendors of your choice.  Or worse, it could end up costing you a lot more in the long run.

DIY Styling

If you are looking for a minimalist modern look, look at buying or hiring some nice inexpensive candle holders and vases set on a satin runner matching your wedding colour palette for your centrepieces. Always mock up the tablescape, stand back and look at your masterpiece. Sometimes what is in our minds eye is not what it actually ends up looking like.

Making invitations yourself can be a very satisfying experience if you are an incredibly crafty person. We suggest you do a test run rather than spending a small fortune on paper, glue-guns and ribbon to hand make your invitations.

Wedding Day Stress

One of the biggest things DIY couples overlook is wedding day stress.  Even if you have planned everything down to the very last detail, there will still be a lot of things that must be done last minute or on the day of the wedding. You may be fortunate enough to be able to set up the day before, but most of the setting up falls on the couples nearest and dearest. And they may not have quite the same eye for detail as you have.  Provide them photos of how you want everything to look. (Remember the tablescape mock up we suggested?)

If you are reliant of friends and family to help set up, just ensure you allow them plenty of time to get ready and relax so they can enjoy your day and celebrate with you.
